How to Keep Your Best Employees
Provide challenging and exciting work. Meet with new hires to better understand individual abilities and motivations.Top performers are often life-long learners. At each annual review, allow the employee to freely express his/her interest in taking on new projects, additional responsibility or new performance goals.
Create an environment where open, honest and respectful communication is the standard. Top performers have the ideas and capacity to make your company better.
Provide regular opportunities for growth and learning. Support each employee’s personal and professional development. Train them how to be the best they can be (i.e., customer service skills, goal setting, listening skills, communication skills, attitude, etc.)
Regularly recognize and reward exceptional performance. Money is not the top motivator for most employees. Top performers thrive on achievement and recognition in the form of awards, recognition among peers, time off and flex work schedules.
Treat each employee fairly and equitably. Never threaten an employee's employment or income. If you think an employee does not warrant equal treatment, help them to improve or fire them.
Inspire your employees to take pride in their contributions. Provide employees with regular reports on the impact their efforts have on the company. Their work makes a difference. Let them know it.
Empowerment: Give every employee some degree of control over his/her job.
Don't take your employees for granted. Great leaders know that the success of their company is built on the quality of their people. The rewards are endless: When you have a productive, successful team, the word gets out. Top talent will hear about it and will want to work for you.
Become the best “Coach.” Employees don’t want to be managed. They want to be led by example. Maintain the same positive attitude you expect of your employees, and lead your team to achieve collective goals.
Become the best company. Top talent wants to work for the best companies. Create a company with a great reputation where they're proud to work.
